Memphis Barbies

I am sure many of you have seen this before, but I think it is funny every time! And, I love Barbies, so enjoy: Mattel recently announced the release of limited-edition Barbie Dolls for the Greater Memphis market:

"Germantown Barbie" This princess Barbie is sold only at the Towne Center. She comes with an assortment of Kate Spade Handbags, a Lexus SUV, a long-haired foreign dog named Honey and a cookie-cutter house. Available with or without tummy tuck and face lift. Workaholic Ken sold only in conjunction with the augmented version.

"Collierville Barbie" The modern day homemaker Barbie is available with Ford Windstar Minivan and matching gym outfit. She gets lost easily and has no full-time occupation. Traffic jamming cell phone sold separately.

Gangsta Ken and his 1979 Caddy were available, but are now very difficult to find since the addition of the infant. I know I have probably bored yall to death with the details of our last two weeks of life, but GET OVER IT, I'm not done! My mom and two of my three grandmothers went yesterday to look at a house for Luke and I to rent. My mom says it is adorable, and we can move in Saturday, so we decided to do it. I have had a very grown up week...buying a new car, moving into a house...It is three bedroom and 1 bath, and just south of Collierville. If you have ever been to a rodeo in the South, you probably saw Lecile Harris, the rodeo clown. It is his mother's house, and we will be living right next door to the legend.
I am not sure how we are going to get all of our junk home, but when we do, I will be sure and post pictures so you can see how cute the house is! (I am saying that to be funny, because I haven't seen it yet :)

KATIE AND MICHAEL GOT ENGAGED!!

Katie is Luke's little sister got engaged yesterday on the top of Klingman's Dome. Her and Michael are planning on getting married next April. We are so excited for them! Yea!!

Goin to the Chapel...

Luke's best friend, Darrow, got married this past weekend to Sissy! The wedding was lakeside, and absolutely beautiful! You could really see the personality of the bride and groom throughout the details of the wedding and reception. I love how all weddings arent cookie cutters of each other, but can all be totally different. Good job, Sissy!
Luke's mom and sister came up from Tupelo, and we were able to hang out with a lot of Luke's buddies! We had a wonderful weekend and are so excited to be living close to Darrow and Sissy now!

Pimp My Ride

Luke had an interview in Memphis last Friday, and felt like it went really well. He drives a company truck, so when he moves next weekend, he will be carless. We went car shopping last Friday after his interview, and had quite the adventure. We were riding along with Pedro (no lie) when I starting trying out all of the buttons. The sunroof made a sound like a cat in heat, and then the back sunroof didnt move at all. (Is that a vulgar thing to say? If you have ever heard that sound, it is absolutely terrifying!) As Luke pushed in the driver's side window button (and when I say pushed in, I mean he pushed it and it disappeared), we looked at each other and laughed. So, we came back to Tyler still in need of a car. We drove to Dallas yesterday to look at a few that he found in AutoTrader. We get to the first lot, and see the 1994 Land Rover that Luke had researched. It was the oddest thing, but no salesman approached us at all. We went up to the door and I just knew they were closed, but they were defintiely open and gave us the keys to look in in and take it for a drive. Didnt make sure we had a license or anything!The guy said there wasnt a price on it, so he asked The Boss, who answered a whole lot less than what was listed on the internet. I think I talked about this before, but we are on the Dave Ramsey way of life, and wanted to pay cash for whatever we bought. This was a huge step for Luke who bought the biggest, baddest truck he could last March (it was stolen a few months later, which ended up a blessing in disguise!) His new car is a huge downgrade, but I am so proud of him for sticking to the plan! My DR guru makes me proud. Anyway, he drove it home from Dallas, and we got the oil changed and they said there was nothing on it that needed anything! That is a better prognosis than when I take my Saturn in. They always have something to fix on it (See They Call me a Grease Monkey post). We loaded it up last night, so keep your fingers crossed it makes it to Memphis this weekend!

FLORIDA.FLORIDA.FLORIDA.

If you are ever in my home the morning we leave for Bousson Vacay, you will hear this chanted throughout each room. And it sounds more like Florda than Florida, but you get the picture. We had a wonderful week in Perdido Key, and Luke was able to join us! He got there at 5:30 am on Monday morning. He was absolutely exhausted, but I was so glad to see him I didnt care! The group this year was Dad, Mom, Me, Luke, Megan, Blake, Jake, Nana (Megan Dale), Luke, and Natalie (Blake's gf). Will, Blake's BFF, who usually comes and plays with Jake had to work. But he did make it down on Thursday after Luke and I had already left. We all got plenty of sun, seafood, and time with each other. Natalie hung with the rest of us, and Megan and I love her because she makes fun of Blake. If any of you know Blake, he needs to get knocked down a few levels every once in awhile. We were able to get to the outlet mall in Foley, and they had some great Fourth of July deals. I got a ton of stuff at the Gail Pitman outlet that was Buy One, Get Two Free! Who's ever heard of such?! That night we ate at Lambert's, and I think I am still full from all of the fixins! One of our secret family talents is our ability to ride the waves. I never thought I was too old, because my Pawpaw taught me how, and he is a grandfather. Well, this year my dad was getting ready to push me out at the critical moment between catching the wave and it washing over you, when he almost pushed me on top of a five year old little girl and her Daddy doing the same thing. I swerved out of the way, and then washed up on the beach at the feet of two grown men. It is very hard to stand up gracefully after getting flung 50 feet by a wave in the ocean. Maybe it is time to hang up my boogie board, but I refuse! We are also a very musical family and have done our best to teach Jake the classics. George Strait, Cheech-n-Chong, Meatloaf, Fergie, the list goes on and on. This year, Dad found his Charlie Daniels CD (or record as he calls it) just in time to hear the Star Spangled Banner on the fiddle for the 4th. Little did I know Jake was such a fan: I could stay at the beach for the entire summer and not ever get tired of it, but our week in the sun was absolutely fabulous!

Alrighty! I am back! I have so much to blog about and so little time. I have not let myself get on here because I always seem to get sidetracked.

I will start with pictures of my Going Away Partay! All of the sweet nurses on my floor brought goodies and treats on my last night. Vanessa made a Reese's cheesecake that was absolutely divine, and the boss, Carole-Anne, brought a cake that displayed their love for yours truly! :)
They gave me a cute gift bag (my favorite color) of things to remember them by. Vanessa also gave me her scrub top that had cowboys and cowgirls on it so I will be able to take some Texas to Tennessee.Later that night, the security guard who wasnt even on duty that night, came up and brought cookies for the celebration (and I mean I was celebrating my LAST night!). When he is in uniform, he could defintiely pass for the Italian gespacho (police). Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and I am truly going to miss everyone I worked with. Maybe not the huge patient load, or working 6 of my last 7 days in Tyler, but the nurses and staff were all wonderful and so helpful to a new nurse!

verbs, all of them tiring

I am in the middle of Cold Mountain, and I loved the title of that chapter. That is what I feel like tonight...I have worked 79.5 hours in the last six days and am quit delirious. But for now, all of my patients are sleeping, and I am only 4 hours away from my bed. I am planning on leaving tomorrow for the beach, which is so awesome, BUT Luke is not leaving with me! He is still out on an oil rig somewhere in the middle of the great state of Texas. I am so sad he isnt going to be able to drive with me, but he will hopefully be able to come soon. He needs a vacay so much more than I would ever understand, but he is gracious enough to insist I go on without him. I am blessed in so many ways, but being married to him has been the biggest blessing thus far. That is all for now...My floor had a going away party for me tonight, so I will post pics of that soon! Holla!

Nursing in 1887

1887 Nursing Job Descriptions

The following job description was given to floor nurses by a hospital in 1887:

In addition to caring for your 50 patients, each nurse will follow these regulations: 1. Daily sweep and mop the floors of your ward, dust the patient's furniture and window sills.

2. Maintain an even temperature in your ward by bringing in a scuttle of coal for the day's business.

3. Light is important to observe the patient's condition. Therefore, each day fill kerosene lamps, clean chimneys and trim wicks. Wash the windows once a week.

4. The nurse's notes are important in aiding the physician's work. Make your pens carefully; you may whittle nibs to your individual taste.

5. Each nurse on day duty will report every day at 7 a.m. and leave at 8 p.m. except on the Sabbath on which day you will be off from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

6. Graduate nurses in good standing with the director of nurses will be given an evening off each week for courting purposes or two evenings a week if you go regularly to church.

7. Each nurse should lay aside from each pay day a goodly sum of her earnings for her benefits during her declining years so that she will not become a burden. For example, if you earn $30 a month you should set aside $15.

8. Any nurse who smokes, uses liquor in any form, gets her hair done at a beauty shop, or frequents dance halls will give the director of nurses good reason to suspect her worth, intentions and integrity.

9. The nurse who performs her labors and serves her patients and doctors without fault for five years will be given an increase of five cents a day, providing there are no hospital debts outstanding.

They posted this at the nurse's station at work. I guess I will have to quit getting my hair done and freqencing dance halls-NOT! And my debt with the cafeteria is more than outstanding! I guess I was a housewife in my former life, too!

Ok, not really, but I did just change my air filter in my car. The last three oil changes the mechanic has told me that I need to get my air filter changed. It would cost me $27.50. I knew I could get it cheaper at Walmart, because my Daddy told me to always say no to mechanics, so I paid for my oil change and marched myself over to Walmart and the auto aisle. I found the filter I needed, and when I got home, I looked it up in the manual, and just changed it! Easy as pie. My old one was really dirty (so maybe you can trust mechanics in Texas), so hopefully I will start getting better gas mileage.

I sleep just to dream her...

I think I have mentioned that I have very vivid dreams. Luke never, ever remembers his dreams, but they must be pretty vivid as well because he talks ALOT in his sleep. The first time he did it was a few months ago and he yelled, "Bandit! NO!" So our poor dog was reprimanded for sleeping. Sometimes it is really funny and Sunday night proved no different. Luke lept out of bed at 2:30 am and ran to the freezer. He got out two pop ices, and I told him he had one more hour to sleep. He started arguing saying he was going to boil one more pot of crawfish! Hee hee...the joys of being married!

Where , oh, where could I be?

I am sure all fo my faithful readers have noticed that I havent posted in 9 days...and my last two posts were just shout-outs to Anniversaries! Where have I been, you might ask? Well, I will start with the weekend of the 8th-10th. Remember that beautiful invitation I posted about a few weeks ago? With something that extravagant, my hopes for the weekend festivities were high. Well, the wedding met my full expectations and then some. Luke and I went to New Orleans for our friends, Brad and Sara's, Wedding weekend! And what a weekend it was! The rehearsal dinner was at a place called The Palace Cafe, and I had the most delicious thing I have ever put in my mouth (well, besides Bob's famous crawfish soup). It was a crab cheesecake...now that combo might sound disgusting, but it wasnt sweet at all, and it was so good I ate mine and the guy's sitting across from me. The fish entree was also fabulous, and the creme brulee for dessert was second to none! We all enjoyed Bourbon Street that night (Luke might have had a little too much fun), and then the next day was jam pakced with wedding "stuff". The bridesmaids met for brunch in Sara's suite that overlooked the river-Beautiful! We had a lovely array of fruit, bananas foster somtehingortheother, pastries...you name it, I ate it! Sara's hairdresser arrived and did her face and hair while the rest of us got ready. We left the hotel by limo and went to a nearby park for some pics. So hot, but the lovely bride had gotten monogrammed fans for us ladies! Love it! Right before the wedding music started, Sara realized she had forgotten her crinoline slip...Now for all of my male readers, this might seem like no big deal. For those of us who have planned a wedding/are planning a wedding/ ever plan on planning a wedding, a small detail like this can cause a meltdown. Not for this Bride. She waited patiently for a friend from out of town to break in to her hotel room and arrive. As I started my descent downt the aisle, I knew to walk as SLOW as possible so that the slip could be put on under her huge dress! She pulled it off like a pro...Then the wedding ceremony, which was so sweet, and even more meaningful because it was my and Luke's 6th month anniversary! Sara was an absolutely stunning bride, and I was so honored that Luke and I were a part of their Big Day. I was also honored that she wore my veil on her trek down the aisle. Saturday night, Luke and I took Sara's "Yankee" friends out for some real Cajun cooking. They each tried a crawfish, and Justine and I split 4 pounds. I was so proud to Southernize these girls from Michigan, Boston, and a boy from England. We hit up Bourbon St. again, and were able to hang out with our Starkville friends. We ended the night with a late night run to Cafe Du Monde with Davis and Hailey Woodward. An absolutely fabulous weekend!

Since that weekend, I had not seen Luke for more than 20 minutes (and that was only twice!). I tend t exaggerate my stories, blogged and in real life, but I am not kidding! He was able to come home last night, and he is on his way now! I am getting spoiled-2 nights in a row! HAHA! This past weekend, I went home to get my job situation situated and to help throw a shower for my future cousin in law. Everything with the job went smoothly, and I am on track to start July 9. Hopefully the process wont be slowed down any! The shower was also a blast. We are so excited to be getting Cassie into our family...I just hope she can put up with Joey :) Cassie and Joey got so many wonderful gifts, and I was able to hang out with the twins-precious as always! I thought after getting married I would want kids immediately, but seeing Jennifer and her babies, I think I can wait just a little while! Dont get me wrong, she is an absolutely perfect mother, and doenst appear stressed or tired, but I cant imagine caring for myself and someone (or 2 someones) all the time! Jennifer is so good with the babies, and they are always dressed to the nines.

I think that is all that is going on in our lives right now. I have 6 more days of work, and then we are going to the Perdido Key with my family for a week! I ahve already started packing because I am so freakin excited! My dad was right, you dont truly appreciate a vacation until you are working full-time. And by full-time he wasnt talking about Happy Times Farm (my place of employment from 1995-2003). Disclaimer: I am sorry my pictures are not so good. I had to revert to my old camera b/c I mailed in my new camera to get fixed. I broke a door off of it, and b/c it is waterproof I decided to not gorilla-glue it myself, but to get Olympus to fix it. When Luke called about it and found out it was going to cost him $166.99 to fix one door, and yelled at the woman about how ridiculous that was, and she mailed my camer back unfixed :( I really love my husband, but I also really loved my waterprrof camera. He said he would rig it so I can use it at the beach next week, so I am sure you can imagine the duck tape that will be used. Ah!

More Anniversaries!

Yesterday was our good friends, Dale and Kay Dee's, anniversary! We hope that it was absolutely wonderful! They were married two years ago, and had one heck of a wedding.

Anniversaries Everywhere!

Two of my very best friends had Anniversaries this week. (That is Laurette on the left, and Heather on the right.)

I will start with Laurette because she has been married the longest (2 whole years). I remember waiting for her to get engaged, and then the night she did chasing her into her room at the KD house until she told us the truth! Her engagement story was so sweet and started off a semester of planning and fun. I can also distinctly remember walking into her room several weeks later and she was packing up to move out of the KD house and into a house with Travis-A BOY! Yuck! I immediately burst into tears and couldnt believe our time living together had come to an end, and our time to move on had come. Her wedding was beautiful, and I was honored to serve her as Maid-of-Honor. Look how pretty she is!

Fun at the Bacha-Laurette Partay!

The next anniversary is that of Heather and Trey. They got married June 3rd last year. The same before mentioned semester, Heather was lucky enough to be my roommmate. We both were dating our future-husbands, and would spend nights laying in bed talking about being married and future kids (of course, mine would be cool, and hers not so much.) Our room was covered of pictures of us and our sig others, and I must say I became very accustomed to waking up to Trey's scruffy face hiking in Maine. Heather happened to get engaged the day after I did, and this is what the conversation sounded like: ABC: "Hello?" (thinking, Heather must be so excited for me since I just got engaged.) HJTS:" I JUST GOT ENGAGED!!" ABC:"Yea, I know." HJTS: "WHAT?" ABC: "Yea, I know. I called you last night. Were you asleep?" HJTS: "NO! I GOT ENGAGED! TREY JUST PROPOSED. THE SAME PLACE MY DAD DID!" ABC: "OH MY GOSH! WE ARE GOING TO BE BRIDES TOGETHER! YEA YEA YEA!" Her wedding was also absolutely beautiful, and I was the Star Bridesmaid! Tea for Heather (with Katherine and Katelyn, too)I am so lucky to have such good friends who are such beautiful brides! Happy Anniversary to the Wolfes and the Skaggs! Love yall!

Long overdue!

Hello Everyone! I realize it has been FOREVER since I have posted. We haven't even been that busy, but working nights I lose track of time...where to start... Luke's dad came to visit on the 19th. He was riding with the Ride to the Memorial, and it happens to come through in Longivew (I think), which is about an hour from us. Bandit loved the motorcycle! This past Thursday, Luke and I went to Dallas so I could catch my flight Friday morning. I am not used to driving an hour and a half to get to an airport, but it gave us a chance to see Dallas. The weather was terrible on the way in and I thought we weren't going to make it! Auntie Em, Auntie Em!

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency. Fabulous!! The big ball is a spinning bar. I found somewhere that makes Bellinis better than Old Venice. Now, I am not cheating on Old Venice, but those suckers were good! We had a wonderful time watching the city spin by, and we got to see what a Sweet 16 Bday party in Dallas is like. Very different from my fajitas cooked at home (by Mr. Jeff) with all of my close friends over (but I will say that is what I requested!) It did make me envy my 16 year old body and wish for it back.

Friday morning I was at the airport by 6:00 am. I arrived in DC about 11, and met up with Sara and her friends for her Bachelorette Party. We stopped and had lunch at Panera Bread (yum yum!) We dropped off Alice and Justine at Sara's apt, and Sara and I went site-seeing. We visited Brad at work, and he gave us an unofficial-official tour of the Capitol. It was so interesting to learn about the history of the architecture. Brad did an excellent job on his tour, and his office was really official! Thanks! Sara and I got hot, and so we went to the Washington Hotel rooftop for some beautiful sites of the city and a glass of wine. I felt very sophisticated. Friday night, we were supposed to hang out, eat, and watch Sex and the City. Our bachelorette had other ideas. We went out and had a wonderful time! The next morning, we got up and shopped for a while (they had an anthroplogie store, which I loved), ate Sbarro, and got in a good nap. Saturday night, we had Sara's lingerie shower, and then went to eat at Perry's. We ate on the roof, and had a delicious meal! Sushi, edamame, and delicious desserts! We then went out and had some more fun! It was a long overdue girls weekend, and I cant wait until the wedding in New Orleans!

Only Ten Days!!

In more breaking news, we are planning on moving back home this summer! Hip Hip Hooray!

I put in my notice at work for my last day to be June 28, and I start work at Methodist Germantown in OB the second week of July. What am I going to do for my week off...Well, it just so happened that week my family will be heading to Perdido Key, FL. Funny how it worked out, huh? :)

I think that is everything that is going on right now. Luke is in Dallas working for the week, so Bandit and I have the apt to ourselves :( Work and sleep is all that is on the schedule!

Now that my 30 day photo challenge is complete, I figured I should tell you what each picture is... Day 1- Luke eating corn w/ our cow corn holders. I was walking Bandit this morning after work (5 minutes ago), talking to my mom about how cute my friend, Tracy's, Save-the-Dates are, when out of no where I am on the ground, feet in the air, and my cell phone is launched! Somehow the sturdy wooden ledge/log I was walking on broke in half and I went flying! I always laugh in situations such as this, so as I started chuckling to myself I look down and spot

I am not kidding. I have really bad luck with snakes. Last year I saw 8. The year before that 11. Up close and personal. This one was brown, and I couldn't see his head because it had been smooshed in the half of the log I was laying in. I jumped up, brushed my scrubs off, and got the heck out of there.
Tyler is not in the country. I think someone (Satan) was playing a joke on me this morning.

Book Nerd

In Germantown, we had this wonderful little hole in the wall (literally), The Book Depot, where you could take your old books and get someone else's old books. It was run by a group of Jewish women, who were not to friendly to say the least, and they had books from floor to ceiling. When I moved to Tyler, I had no where to trade my books. That was until... For all of my book nerd friends, I have found a wonderful site. It is called paperbackswap.com.

You list your old books (paperback or hardover), and when someone wants it, you mail it to them. You then get a credit, and can search for new books of your own. You pay the postage for the ones you mail, but then the other person pays the postage for your "new" book. It is AWESOME!!

I have mailed three books, and received four. I am waiting on a new one as I type! Note: This is also helpful with spring cleaning! (and you might have a book I a dying to read...so post away!) Note #2: It also fulfills my shopping cravings. You feel like you are shopping because you get something new, and it costs only your shipping!
